Newmarket trainer John Gosden is steering Legends Of War towards the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot after an impressive winning debut at Great Yarmouth.

Under Oisin Murphy, Legends Of War, a Scat Daddy colt who cost 900,000 guineas, easily accounted for six rivals to land a new race at the East coast course, the £15,000 British Stallions Stud EBF Stakes over six furlongs for two-year-olds.

Gosden said: “He is a lovely horse and has done everything right at home.

“He will learn a lot from that, as he was a little green, but he came through well. It was a decent race. He is very relaxed at home and picks up well on the gallops. It’s Scat Daddy’s last crop, so when you find a good one, it will be a collector’s item.”

The winner was quoted at 6/1 for the Coventry by Paddy Power, behind 9/4 favourite Sergei Prokofiev, trained by Aidan O’Brien.

Gosden added: “We must think of the Coventry, but let’s see how he is over the next 10 days.”

Legends Of War, returned at 2/1, beat Roger Varian’s San Donato by four lengths and Godolphin’s Leading Spirit, both also making their debuts. Odds-on Burford Brown failed to land a blow in the six-furlong maiden, won by champion jockey Silvestre De Sousa on the Stuart Williams-trained 3/1 chance Lalania. De Sousa then completed a double when top weight Sean O’Casey took the 11-furlong handicap for Michael Appleby. De Sousa had the gelding in front throughout, holding off Scoones to score at 5/4.

Favourite Bailarico defied a six-pound penalty for winning at Chepstow recently to take the 14-furlong handicap under Ed Greatrex. Always well placed, Bailarico, at 4/6, hit the front two furlongs out and held off a closing trio of challengers.

Kaeso, unlucky when hampered in a recent Ascot handicap, compensated by winning the seven-furlong handicap at 4/1 under claimer Lewis Edmunds for Yorkshire-based trainer Nigel Tinkler before Enigmatic, having a first run for Newmarket trainer Alan Bailey since leaving Jamie Osborne’s stable, took the mile handicap under Josh Bryan at 8/1, pulling clear of the field along with runner-up Keepup Kevin.

The finale, the seven-furlong handicap, went to French jockey Gerard Mosse on board trainer Anthony Carson’s 20/1 outsider Gulland Rock.
