Norfolk star Alfie Hewett’s US open debut ends with two finals, and one crown

Norfolk’s Alfie Hewett rounded off the grand slam calendar with a brace of final appearances at the US Open in New York.

The 19-year-old won the wheelchair doubles title with friend and close rival Gordon Reid, but was narrowly beaten 2-6, 6-4, 3-6 by Stephane Houdet in the men’s singles final on Sunday afternoon.

It was revenge of sorts for Houdet who, with fellow Frenchman Nicolas Peifer, succumbed to the Hewett-Reid partnership in Saturday’s doubles.

It was the third grand slam title for the British pair, who triumphed 7-5 6-4 to add to their Wimbledon titles the last two years.

Hewett, from Cantley, and Reid were looking to follow up their doubles success at Wimbledon against the pair they had defeated at SW19. The quartet have developed quite a rivalry within the game, with the Brits having won both of their last two Wimbledon final encounters, but the French prevailing at Roland Garros and the Rio Paralympics final last year.
