A remarkable weekend of karate at the UEL, Docklands, London at the weekend saw Phoenix Karate students return with one gold, four silver and three bronze medals.

They formed part of the squad from the Kenshin Karate Organisation at the WUKF World League, which attracted competitors and officials from all over Europe, including strong teams from Italy and Romania.

On the Saturday, Ruby Moore and Tay Emmerson both competed in the kata and finished in a respectable fourth place while in their kumite sections both were taken out before the medals. However Tay teamed up later in the day with Billy Baker and Leighton Kerr and the trio managed a bronze medal in a hard section.

Billy was also unfortunate in his individuals, but Leighton was amazing and took gold in the boys’ 10 year old kumite, beating his team mate Oliver Whittle in the final. Both boys had some hard fights to get that far and thoroughly deserved their medals.

Gorleston’s William Snowling was pleased when he took silver in his kumite, while William Mortimer from Lowestoft was unlucky this time not to reach the medal positions.

Zara Williams continued her winning streak, finishing with a well deserved silver medal in the girls’ over 45kg kumite.

On Sunday it was the turn of the seniors to show what they could do and Sam Mortimer was in great form, finishing in silver medal position in the ladies’ veterans’ kumite.

Phoenix coaches Samuel Snowling and Carlton Hanton were the area coaches, while Paul Mortimer got the team ready and warmed up off area, and all did a tremendous job.

Phoenix head coach Vivianne Trorey, who was refereeing at the event, said: “We have had some good results recently but this competition was a prestigious one and I was pleased that we came away with so many medals.

“Well to done to everyone. Our next tournament is in Scotland in September and after a couple of weeks rest I’m sure the squad will be ready for some serious preparation before this event.”
