Veiled Secret turned on the style as he ran out a well-backed winner in getting off the mark in the Custom Kitchens Handicap.

His first victory was coming at the eighth attempt, but he looks well up to scoring again on this evidence and trainer Sir Mark Prescott has given him a number of options on Tuesday next week.

Leading the way in the mile-and-three-quarters contest, Ryan Powell stoked the 8-15 chance up two and a half furlongs from home and by the time they got to a furlong and a half out, it was all over.

The imposing favourite devoured the ground through the closing stages, going 12 lengths clear of Excellent Puck.

On a gloomy evening where umbrellas were definitely needed, Barford showed a willing attitude as he saw off all-comers in the British Stallion Studs EBF “Stallion-Restricted” Novice Stakes.

The Pam Sly-trained youngster had improved on his Wetherby debut when a good second at Sandown last time out and progressed further in holding the challenge of smooth-travelling The Last Emperor by a length, having soon been to the head of affairs.

Royal Ascot fourth Bartholomeu Dias was sent off the 4-5 favourite as trainer Charlie Hills looked for a confidence-booster before a return to better things, but William Buick was having to get to work with a quarter of a mile to run and could only manage third place.

Maestro Mac landed the Bet toteexacta At Novice Stakes in a tight finish, with Tom Clover’s 9-4 market leader getting the nod by a short head from Tyrsal right on the line.

It looked like the latter, who brought up the rear turning for home as the five runners went in single file, had been produced to win his race but Andrea Atzeni had Maestro Mac’s head down at the right moment.

As the ground turned officially soft, the Simon Crisford-trained Discreet Hero made light of the conditions in the Moulton Nurseries Of Acle Handicap, always moving with intent under Atzeni and finding enough when asked to better Arzaak by half a length.

The 3-1 shot was continuing the good form of the Crisford yard, which has won with four of its last seven runners, including the 80-1 victory of Lawless Secret at Windsor on Monday.
