The Wimbledon debut of Alfie Hewett has ended in defeat – but the Norfolk teenager leaves SW19 with his head held high.

The 17-year-old, playing against much more experienced opponents, was paired with Belgium’s Joachim Gerard in the men’s wheelchair doubles.

Hewett, the world junior number one, and his partner were beaten in the semi-finals 7-6 (11-9), 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) by fellow Brit Gordon Reid and Michael Jeremiasz yesterday.

That put the pair into today third-place play-off, against Stephane Houdet of France and Japan’s Shingo Kunieda, which ended in a 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 defeat for the teenager.

For a full report, and reaction from the Cantley youngster, see tomorrow’s Eastern Daily Press or Norwich Evening News.
