Four-acre site move for Yarmouth community garden project

The employment training and support group Bread Kitchen has moved to a fresh site on Breydon Road, Cobholm.

Members of the Good to Grow team have started clearing the site so they can house animals, grow fruit and vegetables and continue to provide activities for people looking to get their hands dirty.

The group's former base on Potter's Field, Gorleston, has been taken over as part of James Paget University Hospital's expansion.

The animals based at the former site have been temporarily fostered while their new home is being prepared.

Co-director Mike Smith-Clare said: "We are custodians of a site which enables people to learn and benefit from the land.

"There will be plenty of opportunities for people in the area to get involved and to progress their lives.

"And this is not just about building employability skills or learning. This is a place where people can have pride in the world. 

"This is environmental empowerment."

Moving into the site at the beginning of August, Bread Kitchen summer school programmes have been based at the Shrublands Community Centre.

The Good to Grow team is now getting stuck in, making the land at the Cobholm site more accessible for their operations.

"Local people have given some lovely comments, saying how great it is to have something completely accessible on their doorstep," Mr Smith-Clare said.

"When we moved into Potter's Field, it was as overgrown as it is here. But the team came together and made it an oasis. 

"We are very excited and have plans to establish a community food group for the area.

"We are looking for other people who could benefit. And we always welcome people wanting to get involved."
