I WAS pleased to receive a letter last weekend advising me that Brandon Lewis, the local prospective Conservative MP, was taking issue with EDF about the power cuts we have suffered in Ormesby over the past few months.

I wish him well in his efforts in taking to task this monopolistic, privatised, foreign owned, public utility but I fear he will have little success. All privatised utilities have more responsibilities to please their (often foreign) owners and their shareholders before caring for their long suffering customers. Of course, it must also be noted that it was the last Tory Government who imposed these monopolistic utilities, and their many shortcomings, upon us.

It is, however, good to note that Mr Lewis is wholeheartedly throwing himself into local several issues that he considers to be of concern to the residents of his newly adopted town.

I have suggested to him that he may now turn his attention to the tricky subject of EastPort, the Outer Harbour etc that have featured regularly in the Letters page of the Mercury. Any efforts to throw light on some of the unanswered questions put to our local councils, now able to shelter behind “the Freedom Of Information Act” (Letter from Steve Taylor, February 26), but of great concern to many local residents, would indeed be to his credit.

Perhaps he could take up some space in your next issue and give us his views.

I have also asked him if he is aware of how much of his local election expenses are being directly funded by Lord Ashcroft, whose personal taxation affairs are now the subject of some scrutiny. I will advise of any interesting news on this subject.
