I am writing the 11th Hussars 1914-1918 Roll of Honour and I have one Private (Trooper) James William Miller, whose family /descendants I am trying to trace, as well as any local memorial to James.
James was born in 1891 in Cambridge. By 1910 the family had moved to Great Yarmouth where a year later they are recorded as living at 143 Blackfriars Road where James, his sister Maud and brothers Charles and Clements had all left home with other brothers Albert and Frederick both employed as errand boys.
There was a later child, Jessie, who was born in Yarmouth in 1910. It is believed James either stayed in Cambridge when the family left or returned before 1911 where he enlisted into the 11th [Prince Albert’s Own] Hussars, 1st Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. He was killed in action aged 24 on May 24, 1915 during the Battle of Bellewaarde. His body was either never recovered or it was, but due to the continuation of fighting in this area his grave was lost, and therefore James alongside 50 of his comrades are commemorated on the Ypres [Menin Gate] Memorial “to the missing”, pictured above.
James is also commemorated within the Roll of Honour-Norfolk-Great Yarmouth-WW1 [James William Miller] and also within Soldiers Died in the Great War [James Miller]. Medal Index Card records his entitlement as being 1914 [Mons] Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal.
