I WONDER if any of your readers can help me trace a photograph of my great-great-grandfather, John Ellis? He was born in Bradwell in 1818 and spent 20 years in the army, but was invalided out after losing his right arm in the assault on Delhi in 1857.
I WONDER if any of your readers can help me trace a photograph of my great-great-grandfather, John Ellis?
He was born in Bradwell in 1818 and spent 20 years in the army, but was invalided out after losing his right arm in the assault on Delhi in 1857. He returned to Bradwell, where he lived until he died in 1904. In the 1970s, I was told by an elderly relative that in his later years he was the village postman. I imagine he would have looked much like the character of Thomas Brown in the BBC's Lark Rise to Candleford.
He would have been in Bradwell for Queen Victoria's Silver and Diamond Jubilees, and for the coronation of Edward VII. Surely some photographs of the celebrations of one of these occasions survive? The record office has no early photos of Bradwell, but perhaps someone has one in a private collection.
Incidentally, John Ellis married three times - the first time to Susan Warren from Nova Scotia, who died of Cholera in India. He then married his servant girl, Eliza Utting (18 years his junior), who died at the age of only 38, and finally to Frances Bensley in 1874, who survived him by six years. All except Susan are buried in Bradwell churchyard, where there is a headstone. I can be contacted on Richard.firstname.lastname@example.org or at 38 Ashfield Road, Stoneygate, Leicester LE2 1LA

I HAVE received anonymously a set of certificates and photos that were apparently found in a book relating to a Mr Alan Brian Kirston (en? - there are two different spellings). The certificates are from 1982-3 and are from his time at 2483 (Old Buckenham) and 469 (Lowestoft) Squadron Air Training Corps. I would like to return them to him or his family if at all possible but have no contact details to do so. Any information would be greatly appreciated and I can be contacted on 01502 564696 or at email@example.com. If this could be of interest I can scan in the photograph with people in it (the rest are from an airshow, quite possibly at Duxford).

RE my letter in last week's letters (March 6), my friend's name was Roy Martins (not Mantins as printed). I also forgot to mention that he lives somewhere in Canada. Also I have remembered his brother's name - Jeffrey Martins, who I mentioned lived on the Shrublands estate. I would like to get in contact with Roy if anyone can help. Contact me at 11 Stone Road, Cobholm NR31 0AQ.

COULD I please through your newspaper, make you aware that you have a gentleman living in your area who should be an inspiration to us all. Whilst visiting my father, who is getting over a heart attack and operation lives in the Great Yarmouth area. I became aware of a familiar figure out running. Could this be the same person who was in hospital along with my father last year.? Yes. It seems that the gentleman in question, who I belive is called Bernard and works for a local bus company, is busy training for the London Marathon in 2010. I found out this after conversing with a bus driver. I find that after the strain of an heart attack then the heart operation, he is willing to give his time up for others, is inspirational.
