COUNCIL tenants living in the borough will see only a slight increase in their rent after central government advised councils to keep rent increases as low as possible.

The government proposed earlier this month that local authorities halve the guideline rent increase for their tenants from 6.2pc to 3.1pc - meaning that the average increase will be less than �2 a week.
The news was welcomed by cabinet member for community Bob Peck saying it was something that would bring benefits to many people in the borough.
The proposals, which went before cabinet last week, were due to be approved last night at a special meeting of the full council.
The government is going to make extra funding available to cover the cost to councils, and the situation will be reviewed for 2010/11.
In north Norfolk, local authority homes are managed by the Victory Housing Trust. A spokesman for the trust said that the government guidelines do not apply to housing associations and unless an alteration is made to the policy to include them, they will continue with rent rises of about 6pc.
