A GREAT Yarmouth restaurant and nightclub yesterday lost its bid to extend its opening hours from 2am until 6am seven days a week.

The borough council's licensing committee rejected the application by the Saffron Tandoori restaurant and basement Aura nightclub after listening to an objection by environmental health officer Sarah Flatman on the grounds of potential noise nuisance.

She said the Regent Road premises were close to homes and although it was a noisy area most noise currently ceased at about 2am.

The Rev Gordon Williamson, who lives next door in St Mary's Catholic Rectory, was among three neighbours to send letters of objection to the committee.

He said he was already disturbed by the current operating hours and had complained to his MP on one occasion about loud music and heavy bass sounds penetrating the rectory walls.

The Malins family, who have a baby, said the present noise level was so unbearable they had to close their windows when they went to bed, even on hot summer nights.
