THE owner of a Norfolk kebab shop has been fined £2,500 for employing two illegal immigrants.
Fevzi Hurum pleaded guilty yesterday to taking on Turkish national Erol Ates and Iraqi Jamal Hamalaw Halwist at the Yummies takeaway in Gorleston.
Great Yarmouth magistrates' court heard that Hurum did not check the working status of the men because he was under pressure to find enough staff to work at the Magdalen Way kebab shop.
Hurum, 29, who lives at Yummies, had run the shop for three years with his family and had only employed the illegal workers for about a month.
In mitigation, the court heard that the two men told Hurum they had the proper paperwork.
He was fined £1,250 for employing each worker and he was ordered to pay prosecution costs of £60 and a £15 surcharge.
Just before the case was heard, charges for immigration offences against the business's other owners, Sebahat Gerez, Ahmet Hurum and Zafer Hurum, were dropped.
