Royal fans marked the Queen’s official birthday with street parties, fetes and picnics.

In Great Yarmouth town centre there was live music, union jack bunting, bejewelled cardboard crowns, a bouncy castle, tombola, lots of cakes helped create a party atmosphere in the market place on Saturday at an event organised by the Great Yarmouth Arts Festival and Town Centre Partnership to celebrate the Queen’s official 90th birthday.

In Gorleston Cliff Park Community Church’s Royal fun day hit all the right notes to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. The large crowd was challenged to make 90 sounds on instruments before a mass singing of “Happy Birthday” and the National Anthem.

Meanwhile at Woodlands School a party took place on Friday with over 400 people coming along to join in. There was a live band, face painting and a teacher was even persuaded to have a go on the Bucking Bronco. Emma Flaxman-Taylor from the parent-friend association said: “The whole afternoon was a really great success. Children sent out invitations to the wider community in social housing saying ‘come along for a free coffee and scone.’”

In Caister British spirit prevailed, despite periods of heavy rain and hundreds of people turned out to the Norfolk Broads Lions’ picnic in the park.

The day’s festivities included a fancy dress parade for children aged under five, a marine cadets drill display and performances by the Dragons Stage and Theatre School, Caister Junior School choir, Caister School of Dance and the Dumanisani drummers.

Tim and Tricia Thirst went to The Mall after receiving a phone call from the Lord Lieutenant’s office asking if they would like to attend the Patrons Lunch .

Mr Thirst said: “As we wended our way in our finery toward The Mall early on Sunday morning, the weather changed from a light drizzle to a heavy rain.

“Never had so many people been pleased to arrive at the security gate where cagoules were being handed to everyone.”
