A special “celebration” ceremony was held to mark outstanding contributions made to Great Yarmouth communities.

The event was organised by the Great Yarmouth Older Peoples Network in conjunction with Age Concern Great Yarmouth and Ageless Opportunities and was held at the Old Hall, Caister.

The criteria for the nominees were they must be over the age of 50 years; live in the borough; have inspired others in some way either in the past, or currently; be an outstanding volunteer, maybe that person who makes the tea or puts the chairs away!

The 11 people were recognised for their commitment and excellent work for voluntary organisations, the setting up of support groups or supporting people requiring assistance.

They were Betty Smith, Caroline Waters, Irene Thompson, Barbara Deighton, John Prime, Penny Tyler, Shirley Dolan, Tina Applegate, John Revill, Pat Johns, and Sheena McBain and they received an inscribed medal.

Presentations were made by Mayor of Great Yarmouth, Cllr John Burroughs and the guest speaker was Mrs E Millington-Smith.

This was the second part of the “Participation and Celebration” events. “Participation” was at the Kings Centre in the form of a Fun Day in May, when over 100 older residents had fun taking part in various activities and playing games.

The intention is to make them annual events.
