PARENTS and carers are being asked to check Norfolk County Council's website for updates on schools affected by the eruption of the Icelandic volcano.

The council is working with schools to minimise the impact of the current UK flight ban and is urging schools to stay open wherever possible.

However, some teachers, head teachers, support staff and pupils will be stranded overseas and there could be some timetable changes or school closures as the new term begins tomorrow.

Information about changes to school timetables can be found at www.schoolclosures.norfolk.gov.uk or by listening to local radio.

The council has contacted schools today to give guidance on what plans can be put in place should teachers not be able to return to work tomorrow.

This includes:

Remaining open where possible.

Carrying out a full risk assessment to ensure staff pupil ratios are adequate.

Contacting the council with details of staff that will be absent so that support can be offered.

Prioritising exams and assessments to ensure the least impact on students.
