A NEW website will provide a forum for people to express their views on the state of Great Yarmouth's rundown Railway Station.

The online platform will be launched next week by organisers of a campaign to improve the appearance of the 60s era train terminal.

It is the latest stage in a bid to brighten up the station that has been criticised for its dreary appearance and lack of facilities.

The setting up of the website follows a meeting last week between local businesses interested in helping out with efforts to refurbish the station. Acle based Evolved Media is creating the site which will offer people the chance to express their views on how building can be brightened up.

Company director Tim Fenn said: “What we want to do is use the website to get people together who want to do something about the station. Everybody can have their say about what should be done, but simply criticising does not achieve anything.

“The town has a lot going for it, but that is not reflected in the station which looks like a tip.”

Nearly 2,000 people have become members of the Fix Great Yarmouth Facebook group since it set up in January.

The community is being invited to join a clean up day at the station of Saturday, June 19 organised by businessman Spencer McCormack. That will be followed the next day by a special fundraising event at the Burrage Centre in Gorleston.

Bwell health club director Mr McCormack said: “The aim of the clean up is to complete some groundwork, planting trees and shrubs. It will be an opportunity for people to get their hands dirty and feel that they have made a contribution.

“I am particularly hopeful that local schools will join in and do their bit to help out.”

New signs and a customer information screen have recently been provided by station operator National Express East Anglia.

Poster boards and a new litter bin holders will shortly be fitted and a recycling scheme has also been introduced to manage litter collected at the station and on trains.

Anyone interested in taking part in the clean up day should call 01493 452684. Tickets for the fundraising day are available on the same number, the Burrage Centre Facebook site or email burage@hotmail.co.uk.
