LOWESTOFT and Great Yarmouth Poultry Club held its President's Trophy Show at its headquarters at Grange Farm Centre, Barsham, near Beccles.

The President's Trophy was donated by Eric Boulton on his retirement and the club made him an honorary life member.

Judges were Steve and Phil Fawcett, Rodney Greer, and Trevor Thompson judging the egg classes.

The day was a huge success, despite the rain, and show secretary Stuart Clark was delighted with the 350 entries covering over 40 breeds. Many rare breeds were entered and 106 eggs of (nearly) every colour of the rainbow completed the show.

Ron Carroll, the club's new President is one of the original team who founded the club. He is a panel judge, and has judged at the biggest shows in the UK. He is a past chairman of the Poultry Club of Great Britain and has kept many breeds for short periods in order to achieve a better understanding of them and to aid his judging; his speciality is Light Sussex Bantams and Silver Spangled Hamburgs.

Successful exhibitors included:

Terry Aldous, Best in Show and Best True Bantam, for his one year old Dutch Gold Bantam Cockerel. Terry started keeping Dutch Gold Bantams about five years ago. He likes the challenge of breeding a good bird and shows at all the best shows in the country. At the Federation show he achieved a 3rd and 4th from a field of 37 entries.

The Best Rare Breed was a Bantam Orloff exhibited by Crystal Cutting and Stuart Clark. They now breed four different colours; black mottled, spangled, mahogany and ginger.

New to showing was 13 year old Jack Partridge. He became interested in poultry keeping a year ago when he rescued some hens from a breeder friend. He was delighted with the results of his first show, with his Black Sumatra Cockerel taking Best Junior Rare.

Lewis Seaman, the club's Junior Rep, had always been interested in rearing poultry and his dream became a reality when 5 years ago the family moved into a new house that had enough land to keep his chickens, mostly miniature soft feathered varieties.

Another delighted family were the Daws from Diss; sisters Francesca and Olivia, became interested in keeping poultry after reading articles in Practical Poultry Magazine, they thought it would be an interesting hobby. They specialise in Orpingtons with which won best Junior Large Fowl.

New Atlantic Country Superstores Ltd of Earsham lent the club a 12 chicken hen house and run.

The next meeting is a Box Show to be judged by Oliver Cooper. The next show is the Young Stock incorporating Regional Call Duck Show on Sunday, September 19 and further details will be published nearer the time.
