VILLAGERS fighting for a plot of land to be put aside for allotments have put up their own candidate in a parish council election.
Steve Starbuck will be fighting the Hemsby Parish Council election with two other candidates- Marie Ellis and Edward Bagguley - on November 19, for the seat vacated by Colin Robinson a couple of months ago.
Parish councillors are due to meet representatives of the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners on November 30 to discuss the situation over the allotments.
The Hemsby allotments association has looked at a number of sites for the plots in the village, including part of the maize maze in Yarmouth Road. However, association chairman Noel Galer said the rent for the five acre site close to the village's Jet service station was too high.
Instead, the planned plot holders favoured an alternative site close to the village hall which met their requirements for a modern facility, boasting toilets and other facilities for the changing face of allotment holders as an increasing numbers of women and young families renting plots.
