CONSULTATIONS over changes to the revised one way system in Great Yarmouth are still going on, even though the changes have come into effect.

Notices on lamp posts in King Street state people have until December 15 to contact Norfolk County Council with any concerns over the reversal of the one way system by which traffic now heads south along King Street from the town centre, rather than north from Nottingham Way.

But the new system was introduced last Thursday as part of the 8m regeneration of the area between St George's Theatre and King Street.

County council spokesman John Birchall said the traffic changes had to be introduced before the consultation had been completed because of the tight deadlines imposed on financial grants for the regeneration work.

He added if the council had not introduced the traffic changes there was a risk vital funds would be lost and the regeneration project axed.

But he said the council had spoken to town centre businesses and Yarmouth Town Centre Partnership, and no major objections were raised.

Mr Birchall added: “It is an opportunity that probably would not have come again and given the state of finances generally with the recession, to think that we could have just lost this opportunity then have it served on a plate further down the line is just unrealistic.”

Traffic that previously came north along King Street from Nottingham Way now travels down Deneside.

To respond to the consultation, either e-mail trafficorders@norfolk.gov.uk or write to Department of Legal Services, Norfolk County Council, County Hall, Martineau Lane, Norwich, NR1 2DH, marked for the attention of Mrs L Page. Closing date is December 15.
