A SPANISH Oak tree toppled over in high winds today, blocking a busy village road and forcing motorists to take diversions.The 60ft tall section of tree collapsed onto Butt Lane in Burgh Castle, close to Yare Village holiday park, at 7am snapping telephone lines from a telegraph pole, cutting the connection to one of the homes in the road.
A SPANISH Oak tree toppled over in high winds today, blocking a busy village road and forcing motorists to take diversions.
The 60ft tall section of tree collapsed onto Butt Lane in Burgh Castle, close to Yare Village holiday park, at 7am snapping telephone lines from a telegraph pole, cutting the connection to one of the homes in the road.
Fortunately, no cars were passing underneath the falling trunk, which stood in the front garden of Alan and Sheila Tate's home.
Mrs Tate said: “I was sitting in bed and I was half asleep and the noise of the tree falling was like a bird pecking at the window. At first I thought it was birds, but when I looked again there were no birds around and I saw the tree falling down.”
Officers from Norfolk County Council's highways department arrived shortly afterwards to begin breaking up the fallen tree so it could be removed but the road was still blocked at 2pm.
