PART of Great Yarmouth's maritime heritage could be demolished if councillors approve the move tonight.
Yarmouth Borough Council wants to remove the end platform of the town's 450-year-old jetty because it says it is unsafe and dangerous.
It is believed that Lord Nelson landed at the jetty in 1801 following the Battle of the Nile and the site played a central role in the town's mackerel and herring fishing industry.
The council says that it cannot afford the 444,000 needed to repair all of the Promenade structure, parts of which have been fenced off since last October following a health and safety inspection.
Tonight the council's development control committee is to discuss the demolition plans, which have drawn criticism from the Yarmouth and District Archaeological Society and local historian Colin Tooke who say the end part of the jetty should be repaired.
The council says it wants to repair the rest of the jetty.
