PUPILS from North Denes Schools were pleased when Great Yarmouth mayor and mayoress Tony and Sara Smith visited to join celebrations of their Creative Partnerships project. The couple were shown around the event and took a journey under the ocean and viewed animated films made by the children through portholes in the darkened hall. As they made their way, they were accompanied by giant pirates, flying fish and migrating birds who led them to an outdoor sculpture trail with writing displayed in unusual locations. Pupils took on roles within the sculptures telling part of their 'longest story' to which every child in the school had contributed. The highlight of the day was the monologues written and presented by characters in costumes.

The project has been led by four artists over two terms and was based on improving the children's writing skills. The artists were appointed through SeaChange and included Bel Greenwood, creative writer, Kate Munro, environmental sculptor, Su Squires alias Tilly the Tale Teller and Matthew Harrison, animator. The event was enhanced by the extensive wildlife areas within the school grounds which have been created by the Broads Authority. More than 100 parents and visitors enjoyed the hard work of the pupils, staff and artists.
