A FENCE on the north side of St Nicholas' Church in Great Yarmouth is to be dismantled after loose masonry was removed from the north-west pinnacle. The fence was erected several years ago to protect people from falling masonry but the pinnacles have now been declared safe after a donation in memory of a parishioner allowed the north-west pinnacle has been repaired.
A few years ago the north transept was repaired with a grant from Palmers department store.
The work was carried out by a structural engineer, the church's architect and a cherry-picker.
However, more work is needed on the four pinnacles on the church tower which requires urgent repair, a job which will be expensive due to the need of scaffolding to access the tower.
Anyone wishing to donate to the repair can visit the St Nicholas' Church Preservation website at http://www.sncpt.co.uk or Nick Pownall at aqua@pownalljn.fsnet.co.uk.
