CAISTER Junior School year 5 pupils enjoyed a day at the Benacre Estate where the Countryside Foundation for Education was raising awareness and understanding of the countryside as a living working environment.
The pupils watched the different types of farm machinery needed to work the land to prepare, grow and harvest crops. They also enjoyed learning about working dogs, coastal erosion and Benacre Mere. They observed how the estate has managed to cope with the clearance of trees, controlling population of animals and learned about the variety of species found on the estate. They explored the pond vegetation, watched thatchers at work, planted seeds and learned about the process of sugar beet to sugar. Highlights of the day were meeting the fox hounds and trying to blow the huntsman's horn.
