The owner of one of the loudest cars in Norfolk has been fined for his noisy exhaust.

Hayden Brown, of Lichfield Road, Great Yarmouth, was driving his Subaru Impreza when the noise caught the attention of police officers on July 3 last year.

The 43-year-old was pulled over to Homebase car park, off Pasteur Road, where officers carried out noise tests on his vehicle.

The legal noise limit is 82 decibels, and officers found the car to be at 108.18 decibels when a rev test was carried out.

But Brown pleaded not guilty to exceeding noise limits.

He told Great Yarmouth Magistrates' Court this morning: 'I don't think it's a noisy car compared to other Subarus.'

Brown, who represented himself, added the car was imported from Japan in 2001, has not had exhaust modifications since and has passed its MOT every year.

PC Paul McKay, of Acle Road Policing Team, was one of the officers who tested Brown's car.

The policeman, who has served for 15 years, with 10 of those spent as a traffic police officer, said: 'It's one of the highest decibel levels we've recorded in the county to date.'

District judge Peter Veits said: 'The issue of noisy cars, particularly in seaside resorts, is an issue.'

He found Brown guilty and handed him a 100 fine and 115 costs.

Brown would have received a 60 fine if he had paid his fixed penalty notice.
