Great Yarmouth Town have rejected manager Mike Derbyshire's resignation – and say they are to blame for the turmoil on the field.

Derbyshire resigned after the Bloaters had been hammered 6-1 by fellow relegation candidates Newmarket Town at the weekend – leaving them eight points adrift at the bottom of the Ridgeons League Premier Division after 12 defeats in their last 13 league games.

But the club's committee rejected the offer, with chairman Colin Jones admitting the slump in form is a consequence of previous financial errors.

'We as a committee haven't given the manager sufficient resources to compete in this league,' he admitted.

'There is no point in lying; Great Yarmouth Town is struggling off the pitch as much as on it. The club needs the support of local people and businesses, to help improve these resources.

'There are multiple reasons why we are not getting the support: the economic climate; the club not treating sponsors correctly in the past; the list goes on.'

Derbyshire left his role as assistant manager at Gorleston to take the job at Yarmouth, but in his 19 games in charge has just one win and one draw to his credit.

Yarmouth are on a nine-game losing streak and in 21 games have conceded 78 goals, but Jones believes Derbyshire is the right man for the job.

'After speaking with Mike directly after the game it was obvious he was upset with the result and performance,' he said.

'While I share his disappointment, I am confident that given time Mike can turn things around. This is why on Sunday at 6pm I and my fellow committee members decided to reject the resignation offer.

'I understand fans' concerns regarding recent results, but the majority of the 15-strong committee have seen enough to believe that Mike is the right person for the job and deserves more time to put things right.'
