An 85-year-old man has been charged with mistreating seals at a Norfolk seal sanctuary.
Harold Nickerson appeared before Yarmouth magistrates court yesterday to face charges relating to the treatment of seals at Winterton Seal Hospital.
The charges include causing unnecessary suffering to three seals, keeping five seals in an environment unsuitable for the care of sick seals, poor hygiene standards and inappropriate conditions, contrary to Section 9 of the Animal Welfare Act.
The hospital is a small rescue, rehabilitation and release hospital for seals and marine birds in Winterton. It is staffed by volunteers and money raised goes towards the welfare of rescued animals.
He did not enter a plea during his appearance and his case was adjourned to Friday September 2 at the same court.
