The third round of the Norfolk Senior Cup saw one major surprise, Anglian Combination Premier outfit St Andrews beating Ridgeons One Downham 3-0 on their own pitch.

Saints' secretary Chris Aldrich said yesterday the club was 'very well pleased' with the win, which came with goals from Ben Jervis, Ben Welham and Lee Mason.

The side is beginning to find its form. 'We have been playing reasonably well. The last two games we beat Acle and Mattishall, who at the time were top of the league,' said Aldrich.

He said Mattishall proved last season that the cup can still be won by a Combination side, although the holders were knocked out 1-0 at home to Hempnall.

'We won it a long time ago, probably about 20 years ago,' said Aldrich, who is looking forward to the Ridgeons Premier sides entering the competition in the next round, together with Norwich City and King's Lynn.

Ridgeons One sides to go through against Combination teams were Gorleston, Diss, Thetford and Fakenham.

Gorleston won 3-1 against Holt at Emerald Park; Diss won 2-0 at Loddon; Thetford won their home derby with Swaffham 2-1 and Fakenham won 2-1 at Sheringham.

The Ghosts took the lead after a ball from Steven Harvey found Jason Cole, who lobbed the keeper from around 30 yards.

The Shannocks hit back through a Sam Mallett penalty after Jake Betts brought down a Sheringham forward, but it was not long before Fakenham regained the lead through a Ben Coe penalty after Lee Hyde was brought down in the box.

Sheringham threw everything at Fakenham, seven-times winners of the competition, in the second half, however the Ghosts' back four held out for a place in the fourth round.

Fakenham manager Wayne Anderson said: 'It was a competitive match, however we got the ball wide and used our pace to our advantage.

'We had a few players missing for various reasons, but several players have come in and done well.'

Gorleston lived up to expectations in knocking out Holt thanks to goals from Mitchell Forbes, Chris Sandford and a Liam Bertley penalty.

Two late goals saw Diss through to the fourth round.

In the first half, Dan Wynne failed to beat keeper Adam Robinson from four yards, Robinson doing well to save at the second attempt. Phil Squires cleared a Simon Jackson header off the line.

Loddon had their attacking moments second half with Brendan Burke forcing Matty Webster to make a diving save from a header.

The opening goal came in the 75th minute. Stefan Gilding's shot was blocked but Sam Bryant followed up.

Luke Catchpole and Jon Abbott went close for Diss, then near the end Wynne collected a poor clearance and set up Jordan Rocastle for the second.

Thetford took a first-minute penalty lead against Swaffham, who looked composed on the break but failed to test the keeper.

Thetford went two up in the 58th minute, Craig Burton scoring Swaffham's consolation 10 minutes from time in a game of few scoring chances.

Dersingham Rovers and Blofield must replay after their 3-3 draw after extra time at Dersingham.

Nicky Crawley completed a hat-trick for Blofield, the Rovers scoring though Trevor Daniels, Lloyd Drewery and an own goal.

North Walsham completed a 4-1 win at Sprowston Athletic, their marksmen Darren Patterson (2), Daniel Tindall and Michael Reynolds, with Simon Brighten netting for Athletic.

Norwich St Johns beat visitors Bradenham Wanderers 3-0 thanks to goals from Aaron Kay, David Matthews and Matthew Racher.

A Shaun Cameron goal was enough to see Cromer through to the next round against visitors Acle as the top two teams in the Premier Division of the Combination clashed.
