A woman who has dedicated her life to helping others and loved playing golf has received a lucky present for her 100th birthday.

Odette Mary Sperrin turns 100 years old on Wednesday.

The mother of four, grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of five celebrated her birthday on Saturday at Great Yarmouth and Caister Golf Club.

Family members had come from France and the Isle of Skye to join in her special day.

Daughter Janet Willis said: "Mum was quite overwhelmed.

"It was good home turf for her, with one or two of her golfing companions turning up.

"It was lovely."

Mrs Sperrin's 18-month-old great-grandson Arthur presented her with a penny from 1922.

"A great whoop went up when Arthur managed to hand mum a present," Mrs Willis said.

"Arthur did very well, and mum was overjoyed with the gift, and the two shared a high-five afterwards."

Mrs Sperrin (nee Owens) is originally from Braintree, Essex, but lived in Great Yarmouth from 1951 until 2008 before becoming a resident at The Limes retirement home in Acle.

At the start of the Second World War, Mrs Sperrin volunteered for the Women's Auxiliary Airforce (WAAF).

A Southtown resident in the early 1950s, Mrs Sperrin and her young family had to be evacuated from the area during the 1953 floods.

She and her husband, Ken, were avid golfers, and in the 1970s, she became captain at Great Yarmouth and Caister Golf Club before having a stint as lady president in the 1980s.

When her husband died in 1978, Mrs Sperrin devoted herself to volunteer work, serving in the Women's Royal Volunteer Service for 25 years. During this time, Mrs Sperrin also volunteered at the Grapevine, the talking newspaper for the blind.

She continued in this role until she developed macular degeneration in 2008, which led to her moving into an assisted living apartment at The Limes.

"Mum is just one of those people who accepts things when they decline but is still determined to manage," Mrs Willis said.

"That's how she's survived. Mum's got great stamina and has aged as elegantly and gracefully as one can."

Mrs Sperrin celebrated her birthday with her four children - Janet, Paul, Ian and Mark - seven grandchildren - Tom, Beth, Chris, Nic and Sam - and five great-grandchildren - Teddy, Rose, Lily and Ida, and Arthur.
