In the brutal world of boxing, it might seem an uneven clash.

But Mikie Webber-Kane is hoping the homespun gym he has taken over in Cobholm will hold its own against heavyweight national chains PureGym and the Gym Group, which have outlets nearby.

Mr Webber-Kane, a boxer from Southtown, has taken over Legends Gym on Steam Mill Lane.

The undefeated 24-year-old said owning the gym is a "real passion project".

"It's almost impossible to compete against the multimillion gyms," Mr Webber-Kane said.

"But what we lack in brand new equipment, we more than make up for in atmosphere.

"We have an excellent mix of members here, and everyone wants to see people succeed. The ego is left at the door at this gym."

Legends offers free weights, machines and cardio equipment. The facility also has a combat room for members and clubs.

Mr Webber-Kane said his takeover was "surreal" as it was the gym where he cut his teeth in boxing.

"I have been here since day throughout my in-ring career, and I never want to be based anywhere else," he said.

"It's incredible to see older people helping younger members and the other way around.

"I think knowing the faces adds to the overall atmosphere, and everyone is so supportive of one another.

"Having a gym has been 100pc beneficial to my boxing career. We have trainers and coaches here who are all qualified. Whether it's serious workouts or more of social occasions, everyone pulls together."

The facility offers kickboxing, K-1 and boxing sessions and plans to provide judo lessons.

Mr Webber-Kane's next bout will be on March 18 at the York Hall, Bethnal Green. His opponent is Jamie Quinn from Stockport.

Legends Gym is open from 7am to 9pm on weekdays and from 9am to 2pm on weekends.
