A "rundown" 18th-century barn has been transformed into a thriving restaurant and venue after a year-long £60,000 revamp.

The owners of Barn 1 at Caldecott Hall, near Fritton, started from nothing when they took on the business.

And now they are looking forward to a busy summer schedule of events after completing the renovation of the Grade II listed building.

Daniel Sheales, who also runs Bar 1 in Gorleston, was approached by the owners in March 2022 to see if they could turn the fortunes of the restaurant around.

"We were looking for a second venture so the opportunity came up at a perfect time," he said.

"This time last year it was rundown but month by month we have made improvements and built it up from nothing.

"Now we are open every day of the week catering for locals, visitors and golf club members alike, whether it is just a drink, a light bite or a three-course evening meal.

"With the age of the place, there is always something to do. It has been a real labour of love."

Among the improvements made include transforming a disused double garage into a commercial kitchen and renovations to the outdoor courtyard, where from May, live music events will be held every week.

Mr Searles added: "We've had so many lovely reviews from customers who have praised our customer service and atmosphere.

"Like every business, there has been a bit of a downturn in trade due to the cost of living.

"There are challenges but all we can do is just keep going at it.

"Without the support from family and friends and our great team of staff, we could not have achieved what we have.

"In hospitality, it’s all about the team behind you that makes you stand out from the rest."
