A main road in Gorleston will remain closed for two months while upgrades to the system continue.

The northbound carriageway of Beccles Road - by the A143 - is expected to remain closed until June while Anglian Water continues to build a new £4m local sewer network aimed to reduce the risk of flooding in the town.

At the site, crews from Anglian Water will install a new storage tank and pumping station to hold foul and surface water in wet weather.

Once the new storage tank and pumping station have been connected, Anglian Water will begin work reinstating the central island crossover in mid-June. While that work takes place, there are expected closures to the outer lanes of Beccles Road in both directions.

Previously, parts of Burgh Road were closed while tunnelling work took place. However, Anglian Water announced that the section of work is complete, and Burgh Road is now re-open to traffic.

A spokesperson from Anglian Water said: "We’re working in Gorleston as part of our £4 million project to increase the capacity of the local sewer network and reduce the risk of flooding to your community.

"Thank you to everyone for bearing with us. We know roadworks can be disruptive. However, the investment we are making now will make your area more resilient to flooding during heavy rainfall for decades to come.

"Our work on Beccles Road has started, and we’re currently working from the pumping station off the roundabout, installing a new tunnel to connect to the Burgh Road tunnel.

"Our anticipated completion date for the project is June 2023. Until the end of our work, Beccles Road Northbound will remain shut."

The multi-million-pound project was announced in August 2021, following repeated flooding in Gorleston.

Earlier in the project, a part of the High Street between Addison Road and Trafalgar Road East was closed for two months at the end of 2022.
