A bin lorry was forced to dump around two tonnes of rubbish in the street after a battery fire broke out.

The incident happened in Winifred Way in Caister on Sea and nobody was injured in the blaze.

Councillor Paul Wells, of the Environment and Sustainability, Licensing and Waste department at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said: "The refuse vehicle driver had to discharge around two tonnes of their load onto the road as something caught fire.

"Thankfully none of the crew were harmed and there was no damage to the vehicle.

"A cleansing team attended the site with a sweeper and a digger to clear the load and clean the area."

An onlooker reported the fire, which happened on June 9, seemed to be caused by disposable vapes which had been punctured when loaded into the lorry.

A congealed lump of burned vapes can be seen amongst the rubbish pile.

Mr Wells added: "This is a stark reminder to residents that batteries and items which contain batteries, such as disposable vapes, should never be placed in the rubbish or recycling bins, as anything with a battery can start fires when the batteries hidden inside are crushed or damaged in recycling and bin lorries.

"Please dispose of batteries and vape pens through dedicated recycling services for batteries and electricals, such as the local recycling centres or banks."
