Great Yarmouth's third river crossing is expected to be complete during the summer holidays.

But a finishing date has yet to be announced.

Crews are working day and night to ensure critical aspects of the £121m project are complete before the summer holidays, but no date has been confirmed for when the bridge will be operational.

The new crossing - which will link the A47 at Harfrey’s roundabout to the port and the enterprise zone via South Denes Road on the other side of the River Yare - began development in January 2021.

The name of the third river crossing was revealed in March as The Herring Bridge after the suggestion received the most votes in an online poll.

The bridge's eastern approach embankment on South Denes Road and the associated underpass have been completed. Part of the road has been widened, and a new signal-controlled junction has been installed.

In Gorleston, changes to traffic management on William Adams Way and Suffolk Road are currently in place for work on the western approach embankment and its connecting roundabout.

There are also plans for the third and final river possession to enable the lowering of the bridge for testing and commissioning and to add road markings to each bridge leaf.

Tony Mulholland, project director at BAM Farrans Joint Venture said: "The team are working shifts, both night and day to ensure critical aspects of the project are completed prior to the start of the school holidays which includes the additional work to upgrade the A47 at Harfreys Roundabout, being undertaken on behalf of National Highways.

"We are still on course to have the bridge fully operational this summer but cannot confirm any dates until all of these final elements are in place.

"On behalf of the project team, I would like to thank the public for their continued patience."
