The opening of the second phase of Great Yarmouth's £4.7m market revamp has yet to be announced as traders move into their new stalls.

The fences surrounding the ongoing development of the wood structure came down earlier this week, with people being able to take a look at the 12 new stalls, space at the front for pop-up traders and room for a covered seating area.

The first phase of the project - which houses 15 stalls which have all been let - was officially opened last June.

A Great Yarmouth Borough Council spokesperson said: “This is a very exciting time for everyone in Great Yarmouth as the brighter, cleaner and more open market nears completion.

“More than half of the traders in the second phase of the market now have their keys and are fitting out their stalls in the spacious new units.

“We have some great new plans to mark the opening of the second phase of the market which will be publicised soon and look forward to working with all our traders to help make the new market a real success for the town.”

When plans were unveiled in January 2020, the redevelopment was expected to take nine months to complete.

However, the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and later supply issues slowed progress.

Still to come in the town centre is landscaping by the market square, which will include more trees and seating areas, and the regeneration of the Palmers building into a library and education centre.

At a council meeting, leader Carl Smith said he couldn't provide the full details of the inquiry due to it relating to "confidential material".

It is understood that a monitoring officer is investigating the matter.
