A brightly-coloured exotic bird has been spotted flying around the Norfolk Broads.

Adam Spruce, a nature photographer, captured a picture of the bird while walking in St Benet's Abbey, near Horning, on Wednesday.

Further research revealed it to be an Eastern Rosella parrot which is native to southeastern Australia.

The parrot has a bright, multi-coloured plumage with a fully red breast and blue tail wings.

Eastern Rosella's are not known to migrate leading experts to believe it has escaped captivity from a nearby home or business.

Carl Chapman, a chairman for the Norfolk and Norwich Naturalists' Society, said: "It is an escaped cage bird.

"Bizarrely, I am in Victoria, Australia at the moment where they occur in the wild.

"They are, however, not migratory so the chances of it getting to the UK under its own steam is non-existent."

Several reports of wild Rosellas have been recorded in the UK in the past 10 years, notably in Leicestershire and Rutland where they have been seen eating from bird feeders.
