A circus in Great Yarmouth will go ahead with tonight's show while an acrobat recovers from an injury after falling during a performance at the venue.

The Hippodrome Circus has confirmed that its Christmas Spectacular will take place as planned on Thursday evening, December 14.

The show was stopped on Wednesday night after one of the artists fell an estimated 30ft (9m) when performing a stunt on the 'great wheel of death'.

The performer has since been transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further treatment - but is in a stable condition.

Jack Jay, circus manager and ringmaster, said: "We are pleased to hear that he is recovering overnight, and whilst he has sustained serious injuries we are hopeful he will make a full recovery in time.

"The thoughts of all of our cast and crew are with him, but we are keen to also continue to continue entertain audiences during this Christmas period."

The act itself will not reappear in the show lineup - but the rest of the international cast are working hard to keep the show going, he said.

Mr Jay added: "Incidents like this are very scary, but underline just how incredible these circus artistes are. And what they risk for people's entertainment."

The Christmas Spectacular has shows throughout the holidays until January 7.
