One of Great Yarmouth's "most recognised" buildings has been sold at auction two years after its closure.

Christchurch Methodist Hall, which is based on King Street, was put up for auction for £200,000 after being deemed "surplus to the requirement" for the Methodist Mission in Great Yarmouth.

The sale description described it as a place of worship but that it is subject to planning consent for a change of use.

The 600 square metre building was sold earlier this month for an undisclosed amount via Auction House East Anglia.

Christchurch was built in 1854 and was known first as King Street Congregational Chapel.

Its closure in 2023 followed a decline in attendance, the cost of maintaining the building and a three-year-long parking dispute with Norfolk County Council.

Until May 2021, visitors to the church could park on the building's forecourt with a permit.

Signs were put up on the land by Norfolk County Council stating that parking was banned on the verge or footway.

There used to be space for 26 cars in front of the church, but then there had been only six spots, which discouraged people from attending services.
