A NORTH Sea oil company announced this week it was to slash 80 jobs, some of which will go from its Great Yarmouth base.

Schlumberger UK, which has about 1,750 employees working in the North Sea, blamed the move on “challenging economic climate” and a lack of work in the oil industry services sector.

It is unknown how many jobs will go at the company's Gapton Hall Road base but most of the 80 jobs will go from Aberdeen as well as the company's Devon base.

The oil industry giant provides oilfield services around the globe as well as in the North Sea.

A spokeswoman for the firm said jobs throughout the company were being considered for the axe.
