Villagers will step back in time later this month for a period drama, scenes of which will take place across the centre of Acle.

About 25 amateur actors are being sought for the costumed event which will take place from 11am to 3pm on Sunday, August 28.

Former Acle High School students Laura and Stephen Blackwell have written the plot for the drama, A Victorian Village Mystery - The Curse of the Sleeping Angel, which sees Sherlock Holmes travel to the village to meet his prospective bride, only to find her in a coma.

Laura, 26, of Elm Close, Acle, said: “Our aim is to combine the fun of a fete with the intrigue of a murder mystery and the excitement of a treasure hunt.”

She said it was hoped that the event could become an annual event, boosting trade for local businesses and becoming a popular attraction for locals and tourists.

Recurring street performances will be staged throughout the day as Holmes and Dr Watson try to fit together the pieces of the puzzle and finally reveal the shocking truth.

Following the opening performance, the public will pit their wits against the great detective by taking a walk around the village, visiting the local businesses and stalls. They will be able to watch scenes play out as the ‘villagers’ discuss the mystery and gossip about the past.

Stephen, who first came up with the idea, said: “I always loved attending the Victorian evening which used to take place in Acle at Christmas when I was growing up. Hopefully our event will fill the gap and be really good for the community.”

His sister, who will be the event director, said: “The support we’ve received from Acle Parish and Broadband District Councils has been fantastic with both providing 500.”

Anyone wanting to take part is asked to ring Laura on 0775 1656266.

Advanced tickets can be bought online at www.victorianvillagemystery.com or from Acle post office for 8 or bought on the day for 10.
