A FORMER Caister High School student is about

to undertake the most adventurous and dangerous assignment of her life when she flies to Kandahar at the end of the month.

Acting Flt Lt Sarah Lane, 25, will be on her first operational tour of duty for the RAF in Afghanistan and says although it is going to be a challenge, she is looking forward to it.

She will be helping to run the management of supplies with a staff of 35 and a sizeable budget.

She said: “The budget for the department is to purchase anything from day-to-day items to spares for aircraft which are on active duty.”

Sarah has always enjoyed sport and the outdoor life.

While at Caister High School, she was head girl and joined the Venture Scouts as well as looking after a colony of Beavers.

She went on to study at Great Yarmouth College and it is there that she picked up a leaflet detailing job opportunities in the RAF.

She said: “I joined in October 2001 and have undertaken a lot of supply training at Cranwell in Lincolnshire.

“I was also very fortunate in being sent to Canada. It was a huge base in Newfoundland where we were joined by Canadians and Dutch forces for exercises and training. It meant that I was away for three months, missing both Christmas and my birthday with the family but when in the armed forces you have to accept this situation.”

She said: “In the early days at

college I did seriously consider becoming an English teacher, but then I saw this leaflet in the college common room and my aspirations changed.”
