Beach aliens: The little green men sighted by the seaside at Great Yarmouth

ALIENS have been reported in the Great Yarmouth area today.

The green figures have been seen at several of the town's attractions enjoying themselves in the sun at Great Yarmouth racecourse, on a boat on The Broads, playing golf at Pirates Cove, having afternoon tea at Yesterday's World, dressing up at the Elizabethan House, playing ball on the beach and riding on the log flumes at the Pleasure Beach.

On closer inspection the odd-looking characters were in fact actors taking part in the production of a new television commercial to promote Greater Yarmouth to potential tourists.

Kirsty Burn of Great Yarmouth Borough Council's Tourism Division explained the motivation behind the new campaign.

“The previous television commercial has been running in various versions for the past two seasons. It has proved very effective in increasing our exposure within the Anglia region encouraging day trippers to come to the area. As more people think about holidaying in the UK, we plan to promote Greater Yarmouth with a different kind of campaign to run in other regions next year when people are thinking about booking their longer summer holiday.”

The new TV advert explores Great Yarmouth as a destination with a huge variety of things to do and good quality accommodation enjoyed by a range of people who slowly rejuvenate during their holiday. The vivid green bodysuits the actors are wearing will allow the characters to later be digitally removed from the shots, leaving behind only their interactions with objects in the scene.

Luke Witcomb of Norwich production company The JMS Group explains: “For this commercial the technical execution is more ambitious than before and the result will be visually much more striking, as the characters will gradually 'come alive' through the course of the advert.'

Residents will have to patiently wait until next year to see if they have been caught on film as the advert is being produced months in advance to take advantage of the late summer sun.

The commercial will be broadcast from January 2011 in the Central and Yorkshire ITV regions and possibly on Anglia TV in June 2011, in addition to forming part of Great Yarmouth's online marketing strategy.
