A SCHOOL allotment has proved a blossoming success winning an award backed by one of Britain's most famous gardeners.

Winterton Primary received £500 in gardening vouchers for winning the Alan Titchmarsh Award.

The school was put forward for the accolade after achieving a glowing assessment in The RHS Campaign for School Gardening.

After reaching level 3 in the benchmark scheme children were given some seeds a gardening book and a set of tools.

The allotment was also part of Anglia In Bloom campaign, which saw the Winterton win the coveted Large Village award.

Children have successfully grown a variety of vegetables which have been used in the school canteen.

Head teacher Richard Endall said: “I believe there were only 100 such awards offered nationally and that they have now all been allocated so we were very fortunate to win one.

“We plan to use the award to build raised beds to improve access for the children to the planting areas, develop a wildlife garden, improve rainwater collection methods, buy a new greenhouse/potting shed and put in some paths.”
