Anger over ‘Third World’ levels of litter on busy tourism route

One of the main routes to seaside tourism hubs has been described as having “Third World” levels of litter giving a poor first impression to visitors.
Geoff Freeman, speaking at Ormesby with Scratby Parish Council, said something needed to be done to clear up the A149 Caister bypass where rubbish clings to greenery.
Ron Hanton tagged the situation “a disgrace” and said he had raised it several times with the borough council.
He said new regulations about litter and traffic flow meant the nearside lane would have to be closed for the clean-up to take place and that couldn’t be done before June, he had been told.
Mr Freeman added: “It easily could be moved. We look like a Third World country coming out of Yarmouth.”
A member of the public said people who dropped litter in the first place should be “gone after.”
But Mr Hanton said it was more likely “a huge blow” at the nearby tip was responsible.

Council chairman Adrian Peck said he was “disappointed” at the lack of action.
“This is holiday season and it is not a good advert,” he added.
