A MAJOR project to help protect homes in Acle from flooding is set to begin along the Broads next month.

Environment Agency contractor Dan Nuttalls will be strengthening the river bank on a section of the river between Upton Boat Dyke and Acle Boat Dyke.

The twoyear project will involve the closure of a public footpath running from Acle Bridge to Upton Boat Dyke, and fears were been raised at an Acle Parish Council meeting that work could disrupt Acle Regatta by preventing boats from using moorings by the river.

The annual charity fundraiser, organised by Acle Sailing Club, is on May 16 and 17, and last year's 1,000 collection pot was divided between Acle Voluntary Aid, Marie Curie Cancer Care and a third charity that promotes sailing for youngsters.

But organisers have been reassured the work will not affect the regatta.

The Acle scheme, part of a 100m project to strengthen the whole of the Broads, will involve the creation of “Soke” dykes behind the riverbank to collect any water overflowing from the bank and prevent major flooding.
