Meanwhile, Lowestoft woman Faye Barker donated 300 after completing the Great North Run last year in two hours and nine minutes. Donations from the sale of a magazine produced by the Great Yarmouth Mercury have been given to the appeal. The magazine, part of the newspaper's “The Way We Were” series of specials, was a photographic look back to some of the many forms of transport in the town, all taken from the Mercury's own picture archives.

Mercury advertising sales manager Shaun Coomer said: “We published the magazine in autumn and asked everyone who asked for a free copy from our offices in King Street, Yarmouth and Lowestoft to make a donation to the fund.
