The Age Connected knit and knatter group at Great Yarmouth’s Acorn Centre, led by Margaret Rice along with some of her fellow knitters, have handed over 1,011 knitted Armistice Day poppies.
They were given to Sarah Salmon, deputy manager and coordinator of a special Armistice Day project at the Norfolk library service which aims to have 15,500 poppies to mark the 100th anniversary of November 11 1918.
Each poppy will represent the men and women named on the county’s war memorials as having died in the First World War.
The poppies will be displayed together in October in Norwich then split into small displays which will be in the county’s libraries from November.
Among the 1,011 poppies are three very special ones which Margaret knitted with glitter in memory of her three uncles, Arthur Williams, Charles Samuel and Herbert James, who died in the war.
The knitters are now busy knitting smoothie hats to support AGE UK’s big knit. Their target this year is just over 6,000 hats.
