A BANK has no plans to close a cash machine that has been at the centre of concerns about anti-social behaviour and late night disturbance, but may be about to install a new machine with extra CCTV cameras.

Sgt Dan Smith, of South Yarmouth Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT), revealed Barclays was looking to replace the cashpoint in Trafalgar Road, Great Yarmouth because the current machine keeps breaking.

He also hinted there was a chance the cashpoint could be moved in the future.

He told a meeting of the South Yarmouth Key Individual Network (KIN) the new facility could include extra CCTV coverage, lighting and signs to deter late night revellers from making noise or urinating in the street.

Sgt Smith also said the bank was considering three options for the cashpoint's long term future, but could not say what these were.

The cashpoint has been a source of annoyance for neighbouring guesthouse owners who say they have been plagued by revellers leaving seafront bars and clubs who congregate outside, making noise and urinating in the street.

But Sgt Smith said the police had contacted other guesthouse owners in Trafalgar Road who supported the cash machine, reputed to be one of the most popular Barclays machines in the UK, because it was a bonus and a selling point that attracted customers to their businesses.

Sgt Smith said the area around the machine was a priority for police officers patrolling the seafront on weekend evenings.

He said: “If people see a sign or police officer they will curb their behaviour. It is about reducing the problems down to the most minimal level we can while the machine is there. We have to plan for them not moving it, but they may do.”
