THE £16m refurbishment of Great Yarmouth's Market Gates shopping centre took a new step forward yesterday with the announcement of a deal to refurbish its car park.

Miller (Great Yarmouth), which owns Market Gates, has reached agreement with Apcoa Parking (UK) to take a 25-year lease on the car park. The parking area will be painted and it will get new pay-on-foot machines and signs.

Mark Hewett, director at Miller Developments, said: “This is great news for Market Gates and its shoppers. The new car park will be lighter, brighter and will bring the car park in to line with the refurbished shopping centre and new extension.”

Work on the extension continues, with a new temporary mall to the car park in place to facilitate the demolition of the old Iceland store. Debenhams has begun fitting out its new store and New Look will start fitting out in the next few weeks.

The extension, which will provide 55,000 sq ft of extra shopping, is due to open in October.
