A bid to garland the biggest tree in a Great Yarmouth park with hundreds of twinkling lights has moved a step closer.

Grandmother Julie Staff said in the summer it would be lovely if the after-dark bleakness were lifted by illuminations close to the war memorial in St George’s Park.

Now a planning application is being considered by Great Yarmouth Borough Council.

It comes after Mrs Staff set up an online donation page to raise £2,800.

Writing on the fundraising page she said she hoped it would “bring a ray of hope in the darkness to any person feeling lost and sad.”

She added: “Our town has taken many knocks over the last few years, empty shops, many cuts effecting everything so please try to help me to do this to bring a little bit of light to the darkness. I have picked the most splendid tree in the park to wear this beautiful coat. I just think it will look amazing when it is done and will be something for everyone.”
